Eric arrived in Iowa City in 2012 to pursue a Ph.D. in evolutionary genetics. In the fall of 2013, he participated in an eight week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program held at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. For the next two years he would experience intermittent periods of meditation. Eric’s interest in developing a regular meditation practice and connecting with fellow meditators in the Iowa City community led to his involvement in Mindful@Iowa starting in the fall of 2015. Since joining the organization, he has been an active participant in weekly meetings and is an advocate of daily use of the principles of mindfulness. Although Eric initially was drawn to meditation as a means to provide relief for stress and anxiety caused by specific situations, the ability to be present through moment-to-moment awareness has been useful in many areas of his life. As a new member of the Mindful@Iowa board, Eric is interested in fostering an environment that strengthens his own meditation and the practice of others. He is especially motivated to facilitate conversations about cultivating the values of mindfulness practice in our everyday lives.
